bei Dover, England (United Kingdom)
Route 1 is a long distance cycle route (1,695 miles) connecting Dover and the Shetland Islands via the east coast of England and Scotland.
Most of this section between Dover and Rochester is on road, with a few short streches traffic free.
The route, as described on the website http://www.sustrans.org.uk/, should be "fully signed", which is mostly true, but a few crossroads (and there are hundreds of them) have no visible signpost, or they are quite difficult to see while you are riding.
I would say the best choice for this route is a hybrid byke, as most of it goes on tarmac. Can be done as well with a mountain bike or a road bike.
Except for the initial climb to the white cliffs area near Dover, the whole trail is completly flat. On the other hand the wind may be quite exhausting when you travel against it. Therefore, if you can, better choose a calm day.
"Easy" route because it has no technical difficulties at all. And as you pass through several towns like Sandwich, Canterbury, Whitstable, Faversham, Sittingbourne, Rochester (all of them with train stations), you can make this stage as long or as short as you want.
