bei Pinheiro de Fora, Madeira (Portugal)
This estimate is probably more realistic than the altitude components measured by my smartphone GPS.
Please find the tracks of the other days by searching Wikiloc for "Madeira Feb2016" or in my own comment below (you will see it in the classical PC view, not in the mobile view).
Start 7:55. End 15:45.
Km 0.0. Closed hotel.
Km 0.2 to 0.4. This cross country walk saved me from climbing the gate I had at the end of the previous day.
Km 0.4 to 3.7. Levada do Paul.
Km 3.7 to 5.0. A short strech of road.
Km 5.0 to 9.5. Easy walking. Two hours after sunrise there was still be a bit of frost on the ground, but the sunny air feels like 15 degrees Celsius.
Km 9.5. to 11.0. Beautiful views from Bica da Cana.
Km 11.0 = km 9.5, wapoint with photo. Signposts. Here I entered Madeira's hiking trail PR17. At www.visitmadeira.pt you can see the actual status of that trail at "Useful info > Walks > Notice ... List ...".
Trail PR17 leads along levadas and through typical Macaronasian vegetation. Erica trees remind me of the Semien Mountains in Ethiopia. In the Natura 2000 program of the European Union, there are habitats 4050 "Endemic Macaronesian heaths" and 9360 "Macaronesian laurel forests".
Km 13.5. Off the trail PR17 there is a ruined house. This area figures as a bivouac ground in maps. I think it is very appropriate for that purpose.
Km 18.3 to 19.3. Long tunnel.
Km 20.2 to 20.8. Medium tunnel.
Km 20.8. Here I left trail PR17 and follow an old road down to the left. This saved me a bit of street walking down the modern road. I wonder what is the risk of rockfall here. On the rock wall there are flat plants, Aeonium glutinosum.
Km 22.1. Hotel. 2 nights. A group of hiking tourists I met on the PR17 stayed there, too.
